Radiation Safety – AMMO-66-DL Practice Test

The preferred method for handling radioactive spills involves following established emergency response protocols. This approach ensures that responders work within a structured framework that emphasizes safety, containment, and decontamination, which are critical when dealing with hazardous materials like radioactive substances.

Established emergency response protocols are designed to minimize exposure to radiation, prevent contamination from spreading, and ensure a coordinated and efficient response. These protocols typically include specific steps to assess the situation, evacuate personnel if necessary, notify appropriate authorities, and employ suitable containment and cleanup methods. This systematic approach helps ensure that the spill is managed safely and effectively, aligning with best practices in radiation safety.

In contrast, covering a spill with soil may not adequately contain radioactive materials or prevent exposure. Using a vacuum cleaner is inappropriate, as it could spread radioactive particles into the air rather than contain them. Ignoring minor spills is also unacceptable, as it can lead to serious health hazards and environmental contamination.
